The smart regulator is a device for controlling the charging of batteries from photovoltaic panels. The load control switch may be used for preventing over discharge of the battery OR excess energy use OR shunt regulation. To suit different battery types and use patterns, one of seven different control programs may be selected.

Mount the regulator vertically, out of direct sun on a surface safe to temperatures of 75oC. Mounting holes are 3.5mm diameter.


  1. Connect the BAT+ terminal to the positive side of the battery bank.
  2. Connect the BAT- terminal to the negative battery link.
  3. Connect SOL- to the negative side of the photovoltaic array.
  4. Connect the positive side of the array to the positive battery link
  5. If the load control feature is to be used, then connect the negative of the load to LOAD- and the postive side direct to the battery positive.
Check that all connections are done up tight. Do not connect an inverter to load-.

Program Selection
The installer can select one of seven different ways in which the regulator can operate.
To set the desired program, first remove the click on lid. Note the switch settings in the table below corresponding to the desired program and set the three small switches on the circuit board to match. (Refer to the diagram at the bottom of the page for the location of the program selection switches). Then clip the cover back on.

Chosing the Correct Program
For operation with lead acid batteries with liquid electrolytes (the most common sort of storage battery), choose the NORMAL program. This has all the smart features enabled and an adjustable boost maximum of 14.5-15.5V, corrected for current. For sealed gel or valve regulated batteries, use the LOW program. This lowers the boost max voltage adjustment range to 13.5-14.5V. (We suggest a setting of about 14.2V.) If a simple regulator with no smart corrections is required, then chose the SIMPLE program. This is the same as the normal program without the time delay and sulphation correction. Use this mode if problems due to inverter overvoltage cutout are experienced.

Load Switch Use (Optional)
Use switch 1 to select either the Load Disconnect or the Charge Dump mode of operation.

Load Disconnect
The load switch is normally on and turns off when the battery voltage falls below the load disconnect voltage (adjustable 11-12V) for more than about 5 minutes. This can be used to protect the battery by turning the load off when battery gets too low. Inverters have their own low battery disconnect and should not be connected to the load terminal.

Charge Dump
The load switch is normally off. It only switches on in Float mode. Once it switches on, it remains on for a least 2 minutes to avoid rapid on/off cycles. This can be used to operate an alternate load (such as a water pump) or to implement shunt regulation for charge sources such as wind or hydro which are unsuitable for series regulation using the charge switch. If the load current exceeds the rating of the load switch, then the load switch can be used to switch a relay. Note: If the load terminal is used a catch diode must be wired across the load to prevent regulator damage. (See Connection Diagram )

Voltage Adjustment
The boost maximum voltage and the load disconnect voltage are adjustable by setting the two small trimpots which are shown in the Adjustment Setting Guide. Use a SMALL screwdriver to adjust. Clockwise increases the value.

Variable Boost Frequency
If the battery is not being used, boost will occur only once each 10-14 days. The smart regulator will adjust the boost frequency automatically so that for substantial daily use there will be a boost cycle each day.

There are four indicator LEDs. The upper two show what mode the regulator is in. Either Boost or Float will be on. The Load On led indicates that the load control switch is turned on. The Charging led comes on when the charge current actually flowing is large enough to exceed the threshold.

Temperature Compensation
A temperature sensor can be connected to enable correction for the variation in battery voltage due to temperature. However, most applications will not require one. They are of most use in cold locations.
To connect the sensor, remove the lid and refer to the back page diagram. The wire marked by a stripe MUST be connected to the outside hole of the small green terminal block (T-).The other wire connects to the middle terminal.

Remote Location
A separate battery negative sense terminal is provided which allows the regulator to be positioned some distance from the battery without wiring voltage drops affecting it's accuracy. The regulator can correct for up to a +/-1.2V difference between the real battery negative and the regulator B- terminal. If not used, then leave it unconnected.

Manual Boost
An alternate use for the B- sense input is for manually forcing the regulator into boost mode. To use this, wire a normally open push button switch between the B- sense input and the BAT- terminal. Holding the switch down for about 1 second will force the regulator into boost mode.

The smart regulator has been programmed to help eliminate interference to other appliances.
